TurboGrafx-16 + PC-Engine + Search...

UPDATE 07.05.10: There is at least one hidden message on this page. See if you can find it, contact me, and I'll congratulate you.

DIRECTIONS: Searching "ONLY tg-16.com" results in page scans from books, magazines, catalogs, etc. Find everything from Addams Family to Zonk. Want more? Expand your search to "PCE & TG-16 Community" for a customized search of the best online resources dedicated to TG-16 and PCE (try Street Fighter, for starters).

Check out some of the stuff we have for you...

TURBOGRAFX-16 WALLPAPER: Recently, I have been goofing around making TurboGrafx-16 Wallpaper (for your computer desktop & iPhone / iPod Touch). I haven't seen any TG-16 themed iPhone wallpaper yet on the web, so send me a note if you find any.

TurboPlay Magazine Archives TurboPlay Magazine Archives

TurboPlay, DuoWorld and TurboForce were magazines that exclusively covered the TurboGrafx-16 / TurboDuo video game consoles. At the Archives, you can view page scans of articles/reviews/ads printed in the magazines, newsletters and catalogs of yesteryear. Many new page scans are in the pipeline, so you will see new content trickling out throughout the rest of the year.

PLANS FOR 2009: Upgrade all existing page scans, add scans from multi-platform gaming magazines, etc. This is a massive project with lots of further work to be done. If you can help assist us in any way, we encourage you to contact us today!

UPDATE: These days, the Magazine Archive is the only project I am actively working on. Even the TurboGrafx-16 and PC-Engine desktop wallpaper is an offshoot of the Archives.

Nectaris / Military Madness FAQ Nectaris / Military Madness FAQ (1989, HuCard)

Everything you ever wanted to know about Hudson Soft's classic turn-based strategy game awaits you. Yes, a port of this game has recently appeared (early 2006) on North American cellular phones. Less than a year later (12.18.2006), Military Madness became available via Wii's "Virtual Console" as well.

Who could have anticipated the resurrection of this game? Initially, Military Madness emulated poorly under the Wii, but a patch was eventually released to rectify these problems. Yes, Military Madness has the dubious honor of being the first Virtual Console game to be issued a patch!

If you are interested in the rest of the games from the Military Madness / Netaris series, then consult Base Nectaris today. Nectaris was ported to many platforms over the past 20 years, and it even inspired a few games (e.g. Earth Light on Super Famicom and the Battle Isle series on PC).

Neo Nectaris FAQ Neo Nectaris FAQ (1994, SuperCD)

Neo Nectaris, the Japan-only sequel to Nectaris, was released towards the end of the DUO's lifespan and is the oddball of the entire Nectaris series. It is also, arguably, the flagship title implementing many refinements to the user interface and offering a fantastic Red Book audio soundtrack, among other things.

Turbo Technologies, Inc. (TTi) was planning on bringing this title stateside, but they closed their doors before any contracts / localization had started. Neo Nectaris is a turn-based strategy game that everyone can, and should, enjoy!

UPDATE: Apparently, Neo Nectaris has been ported to mobile phones and will be available to Verizon customers in North America as Military Madness 2. Reports indicate that the game became available Q1 2009, but press releases state a Q2 2009 release date. Stay tuned for more info...

Base Nectaris Base Nectaris (documents entire series)

After I made the FAQs listed above, I started my quest to fully document the Nectaris series. Over the past 20+ years, this humble strategy game has appeared on many different platforms (Wii Virtual Console, Gameboy, PlayStation, PC DOS, Windows 95, NEC's PC-98, Sharp's X68000, PC-Engine, DUO, TurboGrafx-16, Mobile Phones) and has inspired other games (Earth Light on SNES and Battle Isle on PC).

You'll find some oddball stuff, as well: the German PC DOS version of Nectaris is a unique sequel that has weapons and maps unavailable elsewhere (some of the German content has been translated into English). It is also the only Nectaris game developed outside of Japan. The Gameboy version of Nectaris is unique because it allegedly supported a very obscure modem (created by Hudson) called the GB Kiss Modem. This modem, if I understand things correctly, allowed folks to download new content from Hudson's website (i.e. new maps). Also, allegedly, a separate feature (simply called GB Kiss), allowed two Gameboys to exchange Nectaris data via infrared ports. Pretty neat stuff, considering this was for the original Gameboy.

Of course, you will also find scans of all the instruction manuals, boxes, strategy guides, PC-Engine Magazines, etc. that, in some way, relate to the Nectaris series. Demo versions of Neo Nectaris were available, for example, from "PC-Engine Hyper Catalog (CD-ROM Capsule)"... these catalogs are best described as mooks, and contained demos for many titles.

The Commodore AMIGA <--> PC-Engine Connection

This is an old side-project from 2005 that was posted in forums and then quickly forgotten about. Basically, I wanted to help HOL (Hall of Light, a fantastic database of Amiga games) improve their cross-referencing of AMIGA <--> PC-Engine games. I will certainly revisit this side-project in the near future.

Hudson of Japan: How to Use the Online Catalog

In 2005, I quickly threw together this page... for folks who wanted to explore the back-catalog of Hudson Soft's games. Of course, you can find info on current Hudson releases as well.

NOTE: Since 2005, three new categories have been added to the top of the main search page: Wii (?), Wii and Nintendo DS. Keep this in mind until I update the screenshot. It is a damn shame that more companies don't take the time to document their past like this. Oh well.

Telenet of Japan: Quick Links to their Back-Catalog

UPDATE: 10.13.08 -- Unfortunately, it seems that the Telenet site is no longer available.

After slapping together a page for Hudson, I realized that Telenet (Japan) was another prime candidate. I don't know how long the Telenet Back-Catalog will be available (Telenet is a shadow of its former self), so we should probably preserve these pages before the official Telenet corporate site dissapears completely.
